On Friday, May 21, 2010, the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC had its annual commencement during Solemn Vespers. After the Commencement Exercises were completed, Fr. Dominic Izzo, O. P., prior provincial, and Fr. Giles Dimock, O. P., prior of the Dominican House of Studies, blessed the renovated St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel and a new preaching studio. The preaching studio was dedicated to our longtime itinerant preacher, Fr. One of the prominent themes of Dominican and Franciscan devotion is reflection on the Passion of Jesus Christ. This is reflected in the artistic traditions that grew out of the two traditions. In this slideshow, Fr. Matthew Rzeczkowski, O. P. reflects on the Passion of Our Lord as it is depicted in the works of Giotto and Blessed Fra Angelico.

Fr. Giles Dimock, O.P., discusses the special significance of the Dominican Order's devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Recounting early testimonies of her particular solicitude for the Dominicans, Fr. Dimock further explains the especial need the friars have for Our Lady: Lest the celibate's study of the Word of God dry up his preaching and himself, filial devotion to the Mother of God helps the Preacher bear the very Incarnate Word that she bore, and likewise, in a totally personal, human way. There is no better aid for this concrete and affective relationship with Mary than her own Holy Rosary. Fr. Dimock is the Prior of the Dominican House of Studies (Washington, DC). He taught theology for many years at the Angelicum (Rome), Providence College (RI), the Franciscan University of Steubenville (OH), and the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies. In addition to being a regular chaplain and director for groups and individuals, he is the author of many articles in Sacramental, Liturgical, and Spiritual Theology, as well as the recent book, 101 Questions and Answers on the Eucharist (Paulist Press, 2006).

Fr. Dominic Izzo, O.P., presents characteristic dynamics of Dominican Preaching. The friar is called to the "holy preaching" because he has encountered the person of Jesus Christ himself, and has experienced the radical renovation that the crucified mercy of wisdom incarnate offers the world. This encounter with Christ is further developed in the context of the friar's life in religious community. It is from this community and its observance that the friar goes out to preach, and to which he returns to contemplate and study the love that never ends. Fr. Izzo is the Prior Provincial of the Province of St. Joseph, USA.
